Waterfront Development in a Changing Climate is the third in a series of “Climate Adaptation Forum" workshops held three or four times per year.
A changing climate affects how we think and do waterfront development. New threats include rising seas, heavier storms, stronger winds, and increased riverine flooding, in addition to more hot days, fewer days below freezing, and longer periods of drought. This event will provide those who work on waterfront development with a forum to learn about and discuss solutions to the threats that a changing climate brings to development near the water.
Expert panelists will talk briefly about what the latest research indicates is happening, what they have learned about developing in current flood plains and areas that are likely to be more exposed to water in coming years, and policies and guidelines to minimize the impacts of these hazards. Panelists will take questions from forum participants about specific issues they may be facing.
This will be an interactive workshop, with plenty of time for discussion and questions.
The panelists are:
Kristin Baja, CFM, Climate & Resilience Planner and Certified Floodplain Manager, City of Baltimore Office of Sustainability. Ms. Baja has led the development of Baltimore’s Climate Resilience program.
Tom Friese, P.E., Land Development Division Manager, Pennoni. Mr. Friese is a Senior Engineer with over 30 years’ experience, including Pennoni’s work at the Navy Yard.
Helen Ignas, Oliver Tyrone Pulver Corporation. Ms. Ignas has extensive experience developing properties in the Schuylkill River floodplain in Conshohocken and other locations.
Roland Lewis, President and CEO., The Waterfront Alliance, NYC, which has developed Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines (WEDG), a certification program for waterfront development design.
Michael Tantala, P.E., Principal with Tantala Associates. Mr. Tantala has extensive research and engineering experience and expertise in coastal resilience.
The panel will be moderated by DVRPC’s Executive Director, Barry Seymour.
