Ms. Nancy Goldenberg, Executive Director, West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd
West Laurel Hill Cemetery is home to generations of Philadelphians including well-known names past and present. Ms. Goldenberg will discuss the importance of this historic cemetery and how her organization promotes the space for potential tourists and residents.
Mr. Mark Nonestied, Division Head, Middlesex County Office of Arts and History
From simple colonial gravemarkers to the towering monuments of the Victorian era; cemeteries are diverse places filled with much history and artwork. They have evolved over time as societies attitudes about life and death have changed. Mr. Nonestied will give a brief overview of the different types of burial grounds and the markers found within them. He will speak about the importance of cemeteries and how today they can function as places for the living to enjoy and understand the past.
Ms. Jessica Baumert, Executive Director, Woodlands Cemetery, Philadelphia
The Woodlands is a designated National Historic Landmark District. Ms. Baumert will discuss how it is actively used today as an educational resource for local school children, community residents, university students, as well as those seeking further understanding of Philadelphia’s development.
