The workshops will be held at DVRPC on Tuesday, June 4th and Wednesday, June 5th from 10am to 6pm, with an optional night session on June 5th. The workshop will be facilitated by Charles Brown, Founder and CEO of Equitable Cities. Attendees should register for only one daytime workshop as each day will be the same information and format, while the nighttime session will provide additional guidance and fieldwork.

About the Workshops

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a comprehensive place-based approach to crime prevention that utilizes design and space management to promote and maintain community safety. Going beyond changes to the physical environment, CPTED also focuses on community- building to develop relationships and social efficacy. These one-day, introductory workshops will provide attendees with the knowledge and training necessary to begin to implement effective CPTED strategies in their communities.

Key Objectives:

  • Understand Core Concepts of CPTED: Gain foundational knowledge of CPTED principles such as natural surveillance, access control, territorial reinforcement, and maintenance.
  • Explore Advanced CPTED Strategies: Learn about second and third generation CPTED strategies that focus on social cohesion, community connectivity, and integrating social initiatives with physical planning.
  • Apply CPTED Principles in Practical Settings: Engage in hands-on exercises to analyze real-world environments and develop tailored CPTED plans.
  • Evaluate and Discuss CPTED Implementations: Review case studies to understand the application, challenges, and successes associated with CPTED initiatives.
  • Engage with Community in Crime Prevention: Recognize the critical role of community engagement in sustaining crime prevention through environmental design.
  • Conduct an optional nighttime CPTED assessment.
