This session will continue the courageous conversations that were started in the Healthy Communities Task Force's earlier racial equity trainings. Participants will be introduced to techniques to actively engage in effective dialogue by learning how to respond to microaggressions and being aware of unconscious bias. The participants will have the opportunity to practice communication strategies for witnessing, committing, or responding to microaggressions via role plays, outlined phrases, small group activities, and other skill-based techniques. Emotional Intelligence tools also will be utilized to manage emotions or reactions that arise from discussions about the concepts.
The focus of this session will be on practicing the skills participants learned in the previous trainings offered on March 26th and April 10th. Attendance at one of the previous sessions is preferred, but not necessary. However, due to the brief nature of the training, the trainer will assume that everyone in attendance has background knowledge of microaggressions and unconscious bias.
Practicing Communication Strategies will be offered on Wednesday, July 31st from 9:00am to 10:30am at DVRPC. The workshop will be facilitated by Elizabeth Byrne, MA, NCC, LPC, a licensed and board-certified counselor with The Ladipo Group.
