Healthy Communities Task Force Racial Equity Workshop #2

By Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (other events)

2 Dates Through Apr 10, 2019

ABOUT ABOUT

Discussing issues of race and classism have often been taboo in our society. Although many people feel uncomfortable and underprepared to talk about these issues, the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity notes that "we need to talk about race because we are often thinking about race in ways that profoundly impact our decisions and understandings...It has been a principal force in building, sustaining, and shifting the social and political structures and organizational arrangements that control the distribution of opportunity and resources across all populations.  Race also plays a significant role—either explicitly or implicitly—in many of the most important decisions that we make in our personal, professional, and social lives: where we live, who our children's friends are, who our friends are, which political candidates we vote for, what social programs we support, etc."

Workshop #2 will lay the foundation for engaging in courageous conversations.  In this interactive workshop, participants will:

  1. Practice engaging in conversations about race and class. The facilitator will explore and review concepts such as racial microagressions, implicit bias, and emotional intelligence and use these concepts to demonstrate how to effectively communicate with individuals and communities that have been racially traumatized.
  2. Learn strategies to de-escalate communications by engaging in practices presented in Workshop #1 and #2. Facilitators will use case studies, small group discussions, and role-plays.

The overarching goal of Workshop #2 is to provide participants with the necessary tools to begin to actively engage in effective communication with racial traumatized groups.  Participation in Workshop #1 is helpful but not required.

Workshop #2 will be offered on both Tuesday, March 26th and Wednesday, April 10th from 9:00am to 12:30pm at DVRPC.  The workshops will be facilitated by Tonya Ladipo, LCSW, Founder and CEO of The Ladipo Group.
