The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) are partnering with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to bring a peer-to-peer exchange to the Philadelphia region to support future implementation of Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) concepts, which includes various advanced strategies to dynamically mange traffic in response to real-time conditions.
The peer exchange will include a special focus on part time shoulder use (aka dynamic shoulder use or hard shoulder running) and the implication of this strategy on transportation operations, emergency response, and safety. An additional topic will explore procedures for planning and estimating the traffic and environmental impacts of part time shoulder use. The workshop will include in-person and remote participation from transportation and law enforcement representatives from Michigan, Minnesota, Virginia, and Washington State to share their experiences, lessons learned, and best practices in planning and operating part time shoulder use projects.
